How long a hamster lives depends on the genes and of cause breeds. Gold hamsters usually live up to 2 to 3 years of age. Dwarfs 1 to 2 years depending on the dwarf breed. Pet store hamsters normally do not live more than max 1 and a half year to up to two years, while hamsters that has been breed by breeders can live up to 3 years. This is because wholesale hamsters are just breed for the money, not for the health or life quality of the hamster. Many of this hamsters's parents are siblings, and diseases such as heart problem, and other unwanted diseases can bee hiding in their genes. Also wholesale hamsters are usually more stressed and nervous than hamsters who are breed from proper hamster breeders. Plus that a hamster from  a breeder is usually handled and with that tamed and there fore calm and harmonious. Wholesale hamster have also larger risk of getting wet tail, simply because they are more stressed, scared and insecure.  So yes, the life span depend on the hamster, if it is wholesale hamster or a hamster from a breeder. But usually gold hamsters life span is between 2-3 years of age. Whole sale hamsters life span is normally up to 1 and half years, if they are lucky, up to 2 years of age…

So it is adviced to get a hamster from a breeder if you want quality and chances of the hamster living longer and being more healthy and less stressed.
